Submitter's Notes:

Some researchers have speculated that John Louis McCarty's parents were a John McCarty and Margaret McElyea that were married in Davidson County, TN on March 14, 1806. This speculation is based on the fact that a McElyea family was in Orange County, IN with John Louis and moved to Illinois along with him. Another speculation that John Louis came to America in his early teens with a brother and probably worked his way across on a tobacco boat, left ship, and went inland very quickly, leaving very little evidence of his goings until he reached Orange County, IN. He gave his place of birth as Tennessee to the 1850 Census takers because they asked "where do you come from" or he may have been hiding the fact that he had no naturalization papers. If traditional naming patterns for children were followed by John Louis & Margaret, John Louis's parents would have been William & Sarah. His eldest brother would have been named Jacob. John Louis was probably in Orange County by 1832. The 1850 Federal Census lists John Louis living in Northeast Township, Orange County, IN as a farmer with 700 acres of land. John Louis & family moved to Illinois from Indiana in 1852/1853 with the Cutsinger, Gammon, & McElyea families. 1860 Marion County Census lists John L McCarthy (age 48), Margaret (age 48), Mary (age 15), Lucinda (age 13), and Nancy (age 11). 1870 Marion County Census lists John Louis as living in Xenia Township. February 1879 Clay County land purchase states John Louis McCarty from Marion County, Illinois. He purchased the East half of the Southwest quarter of the Southwest quarter (20 acres) and the south half of the Northwest quarter of the Southwest quarter (20 acres), all in Section No. Eight (8) in the Town No. Three (3) North of Range No. Five (5) East of the third Principle Meridian from Edgar T. Moore (Songer Township in Clay County) on February 19, 1879. November 1894, sale of the above property to Mrs. Elizabeth Miller on November 7, 1894 states J.L. McCarty from Marion Co. Illinois. Any assistance in determing where John Louis came from or any additional information on his family while in Orange County would be greatly appreciated. Please contact me at mc8513@aol.com.
